Anzac Day public commemoration returns to Hong Kong
(25 April 2023) Consuls-General of Australia and New Zealand, with the Australian and New Zealand communities in Hong Kong, today gathered at The Cenotaph for the annual Anzac Day Dawn Service.
This is the first time the public commemoration has been held in-person since 2019, following three years of pandemic-related disruptions.
Australian Consul-General Elizabeth Ward says Anzac Day in Hong Kong is an important time for Australians and New Zealanders to remember, reflect and come together as a community.
“We honour the timeless values of the original Anzacs – loyalty, selflessness and courage.”
Anzac Day on 25 April has been one of the most important dates Australians and New Zealanders commemorate around the world for over 100 years.
It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on the Gallipoli peninsula, Türkiye during the First World War.
Today’s service honoured all Australian service men and women, including the over 100,000 Australians who have made the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts and in peace-keeping missions around the world.
In Hong Kong, there are 33 Australians and one New Zealander buried at Sai Wan War Cemetery, each brought here for burial from other theatres in the Pacific.
Hong Kong is home to one of the largest Australian communities abroad, with over 400 attending today’s service.
