CPA Australia is the largest professional finance, accounting and business body in Australia and the sixth largest accounting body in the world with more than 117,000 members. It has a diverse membership and a significant presence internationally with over 23% of members working and living in 97 countries outside Australia, mostly in Asia.

CPA Australia’s vision is to position members as the choice of employers and clients, valued by the community as leaders in their profession. Our primary role is to support members through education, training and technical advice that maintain their professional competence as well as add value to their professional development, recognition and standing.

The organisation has divisions / branches in all Australian capital cities, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and branches in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Fiji.

CPA Australia has established its presence in China with the opening of its Beijing Representative Office in 2002. To further its commitment in enhancing its exchange and cooperation with the accountancy profession in China, the organisation opened its Shanghai office in October 2006 and has set up liaison offices in Guangzhou and Macau. The Hong Kong China Division was formally established in 1985 and has a current membership of over 10,000.

Membership in Malaysia and Singapore stands at 7,600 and 5,400 respectively. These over 23,000 Asian members form 20% of the total membership of CPA Australia.  

 

Levels of Membership

The organisation has three levels of membership, namely:-

  • Associate [ ASA ]

  • Certified Practising Accountant [ CPA (Aust.) ]

  • Fellow [ FCPA (Aust.) ]

CPA (Aust.) and FCPA (Aust.) are full members with voting rights.
 

International Recognition

Since 2000, CPA Australia has obtained a reciprocal licensing agreement with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). This arrangement means our CPA (Aust.) or FCPA (Aust.) members are eligible to sit the International Qualifications Examination (IQEX) and be admitted to the AICPA provided they meet the relevant academic and work experience requirements as stipulated by the AICPA.

CPA Australia has also signed Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) with the following bodies:

  • Certified General Accountants – Canada (CGA-Canada)

  • Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)

  • Certified Management Accountants Canada (CMA Canada)

  • Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA)

  • Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS)

  • Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA)

The organisation is also one of the designated assessing authorities for accountants intending to apply for migration to Australia.

 

 

Your Path to Membership

Individuals who hold an accredited degree will be eligible for Associate membership. Those who hold a non-accredited degree are also eligible to join after completing an accredited conversion program or designated subjects of an accredited program to meet the core curriculum and English proficiency requirements according to the overseas assessment result.

Accredited conversion courses are bachelor degrees or masters degrees majoring in accounting. These courses are offered by universities in Australia or in Hong Kong and elsewhere. Further information can be obtained from CPA Australia - Hong Kong China Division or visit cpaaustralia.com.au.

Associate (ASA) members can achieve the qualified CPA (Aust.) designation by completing the six-segment CPA Program and fulfilling relevant work experience requirement under the Mentor Program.

 

The CPA Program Examinations

The CPA Program is Australia’s largest post-graduate distance education course, which provides a comprehensive, cohesive study of business, finance and accounting concepts and their application to the workplace. Completion of the CPA Program requires passes in three compulsory segments and three out of ten elective segments within six years of initial enrolment.

CPA Program examinations are held in May and October and over 240 exam locations worldwide including Hong Kong are available for candidates. The CPA Program has achieved the internationally recognised ISO9001:2000 quality accreditation.

Members who have completed the CPA Program can also receive credits towards 140 specialist Masters or MBA degrees worldwide.
