Australia Day 2019
Celebrating 200 years of Hong Kong connections

(25 January 2019) – Hong Kong SAR’s Chief Secretary, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, has praised the contribution of Australia’s large Hong Kong-based community at an official celebration marking Australia’s national day.

During an event at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong last night, the Chief Secretary said Australia’s 100,000-strong Australian community in Hong Kong “adds value to various sectors, from business and finance to arts, culture, sports and more”.

In particular, Mr Cheung singled-out the four Australian non-permanent judges on the Court of Final Appeal, whom he said “make a sterling contribution to Hong Kong’s rule of law.”

During the official celebration, attended by more than 500 government, business and community leaders, Consul-General Michaela Browning paid tribute to two centuries of people-to-people connections between Australia, Hong Kong and China.

“This year we celebrate the 200-year story of the first, and subsequent Chinese migrants from this region in China, most of whom in the early years departed from Hong Kong to make a new life in Australia”, Ms Browning said, “many succeeded and came back to make extraordinary contributions to Hong Kong.”

“Today Australia enjoys a deep-rooted relationship with Hong Kong underpinned by these first settlers who undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping Australian history and identity”, she continued.

Consul-General Browning also spoke of Australia’s official relationship with Hong Kong pointing out that a Free Trade Agreement, which will hopefully be finalised in the coming months, will further strengthen the deep trading relationship.

Australia’s two-way trade in goods and services with Hong Kong topped A$15.7 billion (HK$88 billion) in 2017-2018, while Hong Kong remains Australia’s fifth largest source of foreign direct investment, with total investment stock currently valued at more A$166.6 billion (HK$653.2 billion).
