Australia Day 2018

Celebrating our Past and Strengthening our Future

26 January 2018 – Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, has celebrated 70 years of bilateral relations with Hong Kong and Australia during an official celebration in Hong Kong to mark Australia’s national day.

Australian Consul-General, Ms Michaela Browning, said “Australia and Hong Kong have long shared a special relationship in Asia; our official bilateral relations date back to 1947, the year our first Trade Commissioner Mr Reginald Hazzard arrived in the city.”

“Since then, we have been growing and strengthening what is one of our most important trade relationships. Today Hong Kong is our 12th largest trading partner and our fifth largest source of foreign direct investment. It's a natural advancement of our relationship that we should seek to enter into a comprehensive, mutually beneficial free trade agreement. I believe that the successful conclusion of a high-quality Australia-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement will be a milestone for bilateral relations,” said Ms Browning.

This year’s official celebration showcased Australian innovation and creative ideas. More than 400 Hong Kong and Australian business, political and community leaders joined to celebrate Australia’s successes and friendship with Hong Kong at the national day reception held on 25 January.
