Australia Day 2017
Celebrating innovative and creative achievements
(25 January 2017) - Hong Kong’s newly appointed Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, GBS, MH, JP, has acknowledged the common aspirations of Australia and Hong Kong in free trade, innovation as well as good wine. The Financial Secretary made his comments during an official celebration in Hong Kong to mark Australia’s national day.
Australian Acting Consul-General, Ms Janaline Oh said, “Many day to day operations in Hong Kong rely on Australian innovations: every time you swipe an Octopus Card, connect to Wi-Fi or use Google Maps to navigate – you’re using Australian technology,”
“Australia enjoys a close connection with Hong Kong through official and people-to-people links across Hong Kong society. Hong Kong hosts Australia’s largest offshore business community. They are here because of the rule of law, transparent government and political freedoms enshrined in “One Country, Two Systems”. Australia will do its part to support and protect these elements that make Hong Kong unique as a global city, ”said Ms Oh.
Themed ‘Innovative Creative Australia’, this year’s official celebration showcased Australian inventions and creative ideas. Over 450 Hong Kong and Australian business, political and community leaders gathered to celebrate Australia’s achievements and the relationship with Hong Kong at the national day reception held on Tuesday, 24 January.
