Koalas and Christmas - A winning combination
(12 December 2016) - A ten-year-old artist from a primary school in Chai Wan has won the honour of designing the Australian Consul-General’s personal Christmas greeting card.
Cheung Chi-chun’s design was chosen from nearly 900 entries in the Australian Consulate-General’s “My Australian Christmas Card” competition.
The student, from Hong Kong University Graduates Association Primary School (HKUGA), will be presented with (his/her) prize at a ceremony on 13 December at the Hong Kong Fringe Club.
Chi-chun’s exploration of Christmas is joined by three other winning designs which will be used at the official greeting cards of the Australian Consulate-General.
The other winners are Hadrian Chan, also of HKUGA Primary School, Sarrah Ebrahim of Island School and Kung Wing-sze of TWGHs Lo Kon Ting Memorial College.
Their card designs and 25 other selected artworks will also feature in a Christmas art exhibition at the Hong Kong Fringe Club.
Acting Consul-General, Ms Janaline Oh, said she is looking forward to signing copies of Chi-chun’s design as part of her Christmas tradition of sending greeting card.
“I was impressed by all the entries received for this year’s competition”, Ms Oh said. “It’s great to see so many students showing such creativity in their ideas about Christmas in Australia and about the friendship between Australia and Hong Kong.
“I would also like to thank all young artists and their teachers for making this competition and exhibition possible and successful,” Ms Oh said.
Entries were received from primary 1 through to secondary 6 students from more than 100 schools across Hong Kong.
My Australian Christmas Card Competition aims to promote thought among young students about cultural traditions, as well as foster friendship between Australia and Hong Kong. The artwork can be hand-drawn or computer designed. Students entered in one of four categories: Junior Primary (primary 1 to 3); Senior Primary (primary 4 to 6); Junior Secondary (secondary 1 to 3) and Senior Secondary (secondary 4 to 6).
The exhibition will open with a prize ceremony at 5:00 pm on Tuesday 13 December. The exhibition will run from 13 to 28 December and will be open daily from 10:30 am to 8 pm except Sundays and public holidays. Admission is free.
